Optional add-ons:
Brown construction paper (tree trunk + roots option)
Green paper
Cotton balls (clouds)
Scrap Paper or Stickers
Step-by-Step Instructions
1) Set up your page
Place the white paper portrait style (tall).
Leave space at the bottom for roots.
2) Create the tree trunk (choose one option)
Option A: Drawn Tree
Place your hand flat on the white paper.
Trace around your hand with a pencil.
Palm = trunk
Fingers = branches
Go over the outline with a marker.
Option B: Construction Paper Tree (Recommended)
Place your hand on brown construction paper.
Trace your hand with a pencil.
Cut out the hand shape.
Glue the hand shape onto the white paper.
Palm at the bottom
Fingers pointing upward like branches
3) Add the roots
Option A: Drawn Roots
Draw thick, curving roots coming out from the bottom of the tree.
Make them spread wide and deep.
Option B: Torn Paper Roots
Use extra brown construction paper.
Tear it into small strips (no scissors needed).
Glue the strips under the tree trunk as roots.
Let the roots overlap and twist for texture.
(This works especially well for younger kids and adds a tactile element.)
4) Add the ground and background
Draw a grass line where the roots meet the ground.
Add:
sun
clouds
sky
birds
Keep it simple and open-ended.
